Why passive income?
Because you can earn money without working at a 9 to 6 job. Money will work for you even when sleeping or being in vacation. Also the idea is to find diverse sources of income, so you can find a balance between working and living. I personally do think that our scope in life is greater than just working, and we should enjoy life at fullest.
Sources of income
First of all I I could not increase my income my income sources for this month, at least not how I initially planned . I was pretty much focused on my offline job and I accepted some challenges on that side too (got the scrum master role beside my QA one). Accepting provocative challenges is a great characteristic that I have, at least most of the time, but not now.
The day is so short and I would love if I could write posts for this blog, create classes for Udemy and Youtube, take time to research new techniques and perform amazing on my 9-6 job, keep in touch and do fun things with my friends, visit my parents more often, spend quality time with my partner, read all those books that I have on waiting list, see the last season of Handmaid’s tale (or other TV shows). This list could go on forever.
Trying to accomplish too many things in a short time is simply not possible, my expectations are just too high. I guess I should better relax and do one activity at time, and make sure quality wins over quantity.
Anyway, this June is still a better month than May, so the income report looks pretty nice taking in consideration I am just at the beginning, it was a busy month and I had almost no time to work on getting that up. Well that is actually the definition of passive income: generating money while sleeping or while working somewhere else ( in my case ).
Let’s see my passive income report for last month:
1 . P2P Lending income: Mintos – €9.85
Cashback campaigns and great discounts on secondary market made June a great month for my interest on Mintos. Loans getting bought back were another reason why the interest percentage increased from May. Total interest this month was €9,85, almost double than €5.17 earned in May.
Platform | Investment | Interest | % |
Mintos | 1014,73 | 9,85 | 0,97% |
I added 200 euro during last month, which makes my total investment a round number: 1000 euro. The rest of it is reinvested interest. I did not invested yet in another P2P lending platform, for the moment the results on Mintos are exceeding my expectations, the net annual return is more than 12%. But I am planning investing in another lending platform as I want to diversify and decrease the risk.
2 . Medium – $9.20
It was the second month writing articles on Medium. Motivation dropped, I am focusing on this blog and my QA career for the moment, so I am expecting a decrease of this kind of income in the next months. Here is how much I earned for each article in June:
Stories that received payment | Completed payments (USD) |
How to write better bug reports | $6.64 |
Tips for your next exploratory testing session | $1.97 |
How I got a Software Tester job without a Computer Science degree | $0.32 |
Choosing to Break Up with Your Unused Stuff | $0.26 |
3 interesting tech startups you should know about | $0.01 |
- The results are slightly better than in May when I earned $7.59. Actually I consider this a nice side hustle source of income that do not require investing a lot of time.
3 . Stocks – $13.2
First I will present the stocks that I am owning at the end of June 2019. Next we’ll see together how much I earned from transactions or dividend during the month.
Company | Sector | Quantity | Return | Profit in USD |
CVS Health Corp | Health | 2 | 2,12% | 2,26 |
Biocept | Health | 80 | -20,71% | -23,2 |
Alibaba | Retail | 2 | 5,61% | 18 |
Intel | Technology | 4 | 2,68% | 5 |
Match Group | Technology | 1 | -2,90 | -2,01 |
That means a profit of exactly 0.01% for my current portfolio. This is a long term investment, so I am not going to panic that some of the stocks dropped. While these are money that I am willing to loose or just forget about them for a few years in case that markets collapse, I am pretty positive about my investments, as I carefully choose what company to invest in. Loosing all the money is only the worst scenario that could happen and as I said before I do not think it will happen.
Even though I mainly choose stock that offer dividend payouts, no dividends were received this month. The main reason is that I just started investing, so I do not owned the stocks for long enough, but dividends will follow during this year.
This month I sold only the stocks I had to Globant, mainly just to experiment and see how selling works, so that was not based on a real financial decision. My main goal for the moment is to learn how everything works and refrain doing something stupid driven by emotions. Some of the stupid things I try to avoid are: buying or selling based on dramatic news or just because somebody else tells me to do so, without sustaining his/her view with a realistic argument.
This transaction generated me a profit of 13,2 dollars with a return of 8.31%, so much better than my return from P2P lending. I am pretty happy about this extra income and I will use it for future investments.
Company | Total buy price | Total sold price | Return % | Profit in USD |
GLOB | 183 | 198,2 | 8,31% | 13,2 |
4. Fixed bank deposit – $10.19
A few months ago I opened a fixed term bank deposit for my savings. Basically you add a fixed amount of money in a bank deposit that has an expire date when you’ll get the interest and can access the money. The main disadvantages are that your money are blocked there and the interest in not really attractive (around 2% for an year), the main advantage is that your money are in a safe place because deposits are guaranteed by The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
My deposit was for a 4 month period and I received an interest of 10.19 USD. I know that is not a fortune, but these adds up to the sum of the small amounts earned without any effort.
Conclusion
If we exchange the euros from Mintos to dollars and calculate the sum of passive income earned in June, we’ll have a total of $43.63 passive income for June 2019.
Certaintly his month was great and so much better than $13.44 from last month. The most important thing is that I am really excited for the future, there are still many opportunities for earning money online that I want to explore.
